Laurie Derrico led the way offensively against Texas Southern, hitting two home runs and drove in 5 RBIs to tie her career high. Caitlin Bingham pitched five straight innings without giving up a hit to Texas State, and striking out six to lead the Shockers for its second shutout victory.
After two scoreless innings, Wylie Glover started the Shocker offense with a single to center field in the top of the third. Wichita State struck first after Laurie Derrico came up with her first home run of the season, giving the Shockers a 2-0 lead.
Neleigh Herring added to the lead after Sydney McKinney reached first base off a throwing error and Glover’s second single in the top of the fifth, collecting an RBI single to right field that extended the lead to three. Coming up with three consecutive groundouts in a half-inning later, the Shocker offense responded with an eight-run top of the sixth inning.
Ryleigh Buck led off with her second home run of the season, and the Shockers following with two consecutive singles. Glover’s third single of the game allowed Asea Webber to score from second. The Shockers would total seven consecutive hits to start the sixth inning, with Kaylee Huecker adding to the lead with her first career double and RBI. A single by Buck drove in the game’s 10th run, with Mauriana Jamele capping off the eight-run sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Bailee Nickerson.
Glover tied her career high with three hits in the game while Derrico tied her career high in RBIs with five. Nickerson came up with a single that scored Derrico from second, extending her hit streak to 10 games in the process. Bingham forced two 1-2-3 innings to start the game before giving up her first walk in the bottom of the third. The Shockers would leave protecting its two-run lead, however, with Perrigan catching the runner stealing second and Bingham forcing a groundout to retire the side.
Another single by Nickerson in the top of the sixth gave the Shockers a chance to extend its lead, with pinch runner Kasidee Eck stealing her first career base to put herself in scoring position. Webber sent her home, hitting a single to left field that extended the Shocker lead 3-0.
