Facing a rematch from the Fayetteville Regional last season, the Wichita State softball team fell short to Oklahoma State, 9-7, on Thursday night at Wilkins Stadium.
Senior Bailey Lange came up with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate, while senior Laurie Derrico compiled three RBI in four at-bats.
A lead-off double from Lange allowed the Shockers to grab the early lead, with junior Madison Perrigan sending her home with a single up the middle. After an RBI single from Oklahoma State, the Cowgirls managed to score five runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 lead.
The Shockers responded by putting three runs up in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Derrico hitting a home run to pull Wichita State within three. An RBI single from sophomore Caitlin Bingham in the bottom of the ninth cut the deficit to two runs, but Oklahoma State added two insurance runs thanks to a 10th inning home run.
Five different Shocker batters came up with at least one hit, with six players scoring at least one run. Sophomore Bailee Nickerson went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and Bingham did not allow a run to score in her two innings on the mound.
Wichita State continues its fall season on Saturday with a matchup against Southeastern Oklahoma State at Wilkins Stadium at 1 p.m.
