The Wichita State softball team wrapped up the opening weekend of its fall schedule on Sunday with a 13-2 win over Crowder at Wilkins Stadium.
Nine players collected at least one hit for the Shockers, with senior Bailey Lange leading the way with a 3-for-4 and a three RBI outing at the plate. Four Shocker pitchers combined for seven strikeouts and only allowed five hits, forcing the Roughriders to hit .147 on the day.
A double from Lange set her up to score the game’s first run when freshman Adeline Reese hit a sacrifice fly to center in the top of the first inning. The Shockers followed that up with a four-run third inning, with senior Laurie Derrico coming up with a single to score Reese from second and extending the Wichita State lead to 5-1.
Lange’s home run in the bottom of the fourth scored sophomore Ryleigh Buck from third and pushed the Shockers to a six-run advantage. Junior Madison Perrigan led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a triple to right-center, reaching home plate thanks to a ground out to second base from freshman Lauren Mills. Inserted in the lineup as a pinch hitter, sophomore Caitlin Bingham hit a two-out single that scored Derrico from second later in the inning.
After an RBI double from sophomore Kaylee Huecker in the bottom of the sixth, the Shockers would add to their lead off a Crowder passed ball and a hard hit liner to right field from sophomore Bailee Nickerson. Senior Bethany Canada drove in the game’s final run after getting hit by the pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Wichita State continues its fall campaign with a rematch against Oklahoma State on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium. The Shockers swept the regular season matchups with the Cowgirls in 2018 and came up with two more victories in last season’s NCAA Tournament that put Wichita State in their first NCAA Regional Final in program history.
