HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KSNW) — We started our KSN Summer Road Trip Monday, July 12. Our first stop was Hutchinson at 9 a.m. We met some wonderful people during our visit to Chester I. Lewis Plaza, 15 E. 1st Street.
Hutchinson is the county seat of Reno County. It has around 41,000 people. Hutch, as it is often called, has many attractions including the Cosmosphere, one of the first affiliates of the Smithsonian Institution and long-time partner with the National Air & Space Museum. In addition to aerospace artifacts, the Cosmosphere houses Spaceworks, which has restored Saturn engines from the Apollo program. The Liberty Bell 7 and the Odessey, and most recently, the Apollo mission control consoles.
Salt is a major portion of the community’s current economy and the city’s history and is celebrated at Strataca, Kansas Underground Salt Museum. The Carey family that started Carey Salt would be instrumental in the community’s success, including starting the planetarium that would become the Cosmosphere and donating lands for public parks.
Nearly 350,000 people flock to Hutchinson every September for the Kansas State Fair, celebrating agriculture, industry and culture from across the state.
