We stopped by Clayworks in Hutchinson Monday around 11:30 a.m.
Hutchinson is the county seat of Reno County, home to around 42,000 people. Hutch, as its often called, has many attractions including the Cosmosphere, one of the first affiliates of the Smithsonian Institution, and long-time partner with the National Air & Space Museum. In addition to aerospace artifacts, the The Cosmosphere houses Spaceworks, which has restored Saturn engines from the Apollo program, The Liberty Bell 7 and the Odessey, and most recently the Apollo mission control consoles.
Cosmosphere was named one of the first affiliates of the Smithsonian Institution, formalizing a long-term relationship with the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum.
Salt is a major portion of the community’s current economy and the city’s history, celebrated at Strataca, Kansas Underground Salt Museum. The Carey family that started Carey Salt, would be instrumental in the community’s success, including starting the planetarium that would become the Cosmosphere and donating lands for public parks.
Nearly 350,000 flock to Hutch every September for the Kansas State Fair, celebrating agriculture, industry and culture from across the state.
