LYONS, Kan. (KSNW) — The KSN Summer Road Trip stopped in Lyons on our last day. Our team met people at the Rice County Courthouse. We want to thank everyone who came out to say ‘hi’! KSN News was broadcast live from Lyons during KSN News at Noon.
Lyons, a town of 3,611 residents, is the county seat of Rice County. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income is $49,448.
The town is right in the middle of Kansas. It is halfway between Great Bend and McPherson on Kansas Highway 56. The highway takes about the same route as the old Santa Fe Trail. When you visit the town, you can see some of the artifacts found along the trail and learn about the trail with a visit to the Coronado Quivira Museum.
Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his conquistadors spent more than a month with the Quivira in Rice County.
The Rice County website says residents work in agriculture, manufacturing, service and retail businesses. In Lyons, one of the employers is Compass Minerals, formerly known as North American Salt. The plant has been in Lyons since 1911. There is also a Central Salt depot in the town. Another company vital to the community is Lyons Manufacturing Co. It was founded in 1939.
