Derricks Discussion – Round two of severe weather

Weather Blog

Northcentral and Southcentral Kansas will be hit the hardest with severe weather today. This is why NC Kansas is under a moderate risk and SC Kansas is under a enhanced risk. What this means is, the conditions are favorable for strong winds, large hail and tornadoes.Winds and large hail look to be the worst part of this system. Most of central Kansas will see a large hail storm today. This also include Wichita. It does appear that the majority of the storms will skirt just north of Wichita, but a few stronger storms could also pass. Stay aware because these storms could pop up at any time. The biggest threat is large hail. However, these storms also bring the risk or tornadoes. If these storms stay away from one another, this will bring a bigger chance of tornadoes. However, it does look like they will turn into an MCS (cluster up) today. With that being said, this is Kansas, there is still a good chance a tornado can form at any time. A few storms will activate in SW Kansas. These storms will quickly turn severe with 60+ winds and quarter size hail. As they push east, they will continue to gain energy.Once these storms push east, they will grow and become more powerful. This is also when we bring the chance of Baseball size hail and 70+ hour winds. Also an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out. These storms will be heat driven and sun driven. Once the sun sets they will start to fall apart. It does appear that a few of these storms will stay organized and stay severe towards our eastern counties. Even at 10 at night the tornado threat will still be there.
