On Ronelle’s Radar: Severe threat ramps up Wednesday afternoon, evening

Weather Blog

Today is a day that everyone will need to be weather aware. All modes of severe weather are possible later this afternoon and evening, especially in South Central and Southeastern Kansas. This includes large hail, damaging winds, some flooding due to heavy rain, and even a tornado or two.

An Enhanced Risk of severe weather has been extended into South Central Kansas. A cold front will sweep through the state today which will spark and ignite showers and storms. Northwestern Kansas is already behind the front and won’t see much stormy or wet weather but some storms moved through during the overnight and there could still be a random storm through sunrise.

Our other zones along and ahead of the front are where storms will likely develop. You can tell where these areas are based on where winds are coming out of the south and where it will generally be warmer in the afternoon.

Storms will start to develop and pop between 2pm and 4pm in Southwestern Kansas and along the Oklahoma Panhandle. Storms keep developing and growing as we approach the evening and will eventually cluster together after sundown.

This is when we’ll have a risk of flooding and some locations could pick up a quick .50″ to 1.50″ of rain. The severe threat will diminish overnight as cooler air filters in from the north.

A few lingering showers are possible early in the morning and another batch of showers is possible during the afternoon and evening. However, severe weather isn’t expected Thursday.

We’ll get a break from wet and stormy weather for a couple of days Friday and Saturday. Storm chances return Easter Sunday and we’ll have to be on guard as some of these storms could be strong. Unsettled conditions continue into early next week with some showers and storms around.
