Severe storms hit parts of southern Kansas hard this evening which included a couple of tornadoes in Greenwood and Butler counties.  Eureka was hit hard…

Trooper Rick with the Kansas Highway Patrol reports that people are injured.  Five people were taken to be evaluated and one is in critical conditions.  Early reports are that the courthouse, high school, KDOT, numerous houses and garages have been damaged.  There is also no power to the city.  The video we have from our crews in Eureka shows such devastation.  My heart goes out to the folks there.

Tomorrow, the folks from the National Weather Service office will go to Eureka to survey the damage.  They will verify how strong the tornado was this evening.

KSN has crews in Eureka right now and will have updates throughout the day tomorrow starting at 4:30 AM.  While storms continue to drive southward tonight, we are preparing for a heat wave.  Temperatures will be in the upper 90s and the lower 100s for the rest of the work week.  This is, unfortunately, something else folks in Eureka will have to face as the clean up begins.  Stay with KSN for continuing coverage. – Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman
